We are deeply saddened by the loss of Lenwood Sloan — an extraordinary human being whose life’s work defies any single title. Lenwood began his more than 40-year career as a dancer, performing on world stages and earning international recognition for his artistry and innovation. His work evolved across disciplines, and he became catalytic force in arts leadership and cultural policy.

Over the course of his multifaceted life, Lenwood moved seamlessly between performing, directing, teaching, and policymaking. He produced socially conscious theater, guided arts institutions, curated cultural festivals, and launched creative programs that brought the arts into public spaces and daily life. He was a tireless “gunrunner for the arts,” opening doors, building bridges, and ensuring that creative voices—especially those too often marginalized—were heard.

As a historian and preservationist, Lenwood played a vital role in conserving and elevating Black history, particularly in Pennsylvania. We had the honor of working with Lenwood in the production of Gathering at the Crossroads which can be found in Harrisburg, PA. This work pays tribute to four influential orators gathered around an orator’s pedestal following the passing of the 15th Amendment.

Our hearts are with his family, friends, and the many communities he shaped and inspired. Lenwood’s absence is deeply felt, but his spirit, legacy, and influence will continue to move through the world—just as he always did.
